I recently read Echo, by Pam Muñoz Ryan. It was one of the best books I’ve read in a while, and I highly recommend it. The book is set during World War II, in Germany and the US. I think it’s about overcoming discrimination.
Structure
There were these four stories that were intertwined and they were all connected by a special harmonica. It looks kind of long, but I couldn’t help but finish it in one night (I got kind of lost in the story).
Raves
I feel like I got to know the characters really well and I was invested in their lives. I really like books like this with intertwined stories connected by an object that each of the characters has or finds. It was interesting to see each of the characters dealing with the different challenges in their lives. I was sad at the end of the book because the story was over and I wanted to know more about what happened to these wonderful people. I really loved the format of the book. The design of the book was also very pretty.
Rants
It started off a teensy bit slow, but it sped up pretty soon. The title page was after the start of the story, which was a bit confusing.
Bottom Line
I would recommend it to people who are interested in music and/or history/historical fiction. I will definitely be looking for more books from this author.
